Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy A Wellness Game-Changer

We know that midlife is a time of transformation—physically, mentally, and emotionally. And as you know, I am always on the hunt for new ways to improve our midlife journeys in order to live our best lives for longer.  One emerging therapy that I keep hearing about and which is gaining traction among health-conscious individuals is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). You might have already heard of it, as it was originally used for treating deep-sea divers with decompression sickness, or “the bends” as it is more commonly known. HBOT is now being embraced for its potential anti-aging, cognitive, and recovery benefits—not to mention positive effects on some of midlife’s general niggles and as such, I was keen to try it out and report back.

I went along to Hybo2 House in Winchester, Hampshire which was founded by Fashion Stylist and Broadcaster Miranda Holder and her husband, after Miranda underwent intensive hyperbaric therapy in an attempt to prevent her foot being amputated following a traumatic car accident. At the time, HBOT was virtually unheard of and Miranda’s medical team were incredulous when she returned after 20 sessions with a fully healed Talus bone which was previously deemed ‘incurable’. She had undergone her treatment at an MS Centre where she learned that for many of the patients, the treatment made the difference between being wheelchair-bound and walking unaided.  This prompted the Holders to set up a local clinic in their home county of Hampshire in order to make this healing modality previously only reserved for A listers and athletes, more accessible for all.

Since fully healing from her injuries, Miranda has continued to have regular sessions, she has found it extremely beneficial  for post exercise recovery as well as virtually relieving perimenopause symptoms. ‘After a session I sleep like a baby, have a clearer mind and a significant improvement in energy levels, the results are cumulative, so the more you have the better you feel. It’s an invaluable wellness tool’.

What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a safe, non-invasive and natural way to increase the level of oxygen in the body to stimulate cell growth and repair damaged tissues and organs, improving the body’s effectiveness at healing and recovery whilst helping to eliminate harmful toxins.  It also is reputed to have some other rather beneficial effects such as improved skin tone, as a recent clinical trial showed collagen fibres increased in density after use.

Some context first: the air we breathe every day is made up of approximately 78 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen. During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, almost pure oxygen is breathed via a mask whilst you experience increased pressure in a chamber. This hyperbaric pressure allows oxygen to be absorbed much more readily, supersaturating the bloodstream, resulting in a rapid and intense rise in oxygen levels. This extra oxygen is carried around the body by the blood plasma enabling the delivery of high levels of oxygen to all tissues in the body, which facilitates a greater rate of cell division to take place.  This is fundamental to tissue growth, regeneration, healing and repair, especially during the body’s recovery process after injury, surgery or illness and has shown incredible results in patients suffering from long covid.

How Can HBOT Benefit You in Midlife?

  1. Boosts Brain Function & Mental Clarity
As we know, many midlifers experience brain fog, memory lapses, and cognitive slowdown. Studies suggest that HBOT may stimulate neuroplasticity, supporting brain health and potentially reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
  2. Accelerates Recovery & Reduces Inflammation
Chronic inflammation is a key contributor to age-related ailments, from joint pain to cardiovascular issues. HBOT has been shown to decrease inflammation, speed up recovery from injuries, and even improve conditions like arthritis.
  3. Enhances Skin & Cellular Regeneration
Looking for a natural glow? Increased oxygen levels can promote collagen production, improving skin elasticity and reducing fine lines—offering a potential anti-aging boost from the inside out.
  4. Supports Energy Levels & Physical Stamina
If fatigue is creeping in, HBOT may help by enhancing mitochondrial function, which plays a key role in energy production. This can lead to improved stamina, better workouts, and overall increased vitality.
  5. Strengthens the Immune System
As our immune function declines, HBOT may offer a helping hand by stimulating white blood cell production and improving the body’s ability to fight infections and heal faster.

Is HBOT Right for You?

While HBOT is generally safe, it’s always best to consult a healthcare provider before beginning any new treatment. I felt great after my treatment, was ravenously hungry and slept extremely well, but I would say if you suffer with claustrophobia, you might find the tanks challenging, however, Hybo 2 House has a wonderful walk in area, much like a business class airline seat, that you can sit in and do a session and take your laptop if that is more your vibe.  Sessions can range from 60–90 minutes and you are monitored throughout by the team.  I listened to 2 podcast episodes (The Midlife Entrepreneur with Jo Glynn Smith since you asked!)  and the time passed quickly. They also have tents where parents and children can go in together, so the options are endless.

The Future of Midlife Health

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is no longer just for elite athletes, A listers and medical patients—it’s an exciting tool for anyone looking to enhance longevity, boost energy, and improve overall well-being in midlife and clinics are springing up all over the UK, sometimes in conjunction with gyms or clinics.  I loved the fact that Hybo2 House also sell handy little oxygen tanks with 200 breaths of pure O2 which are the size of a water bottle and that you can take with you to the gym to have a couple of pumps after your spin class.

If you’re seeking a science-backed way to feel rejuvenated, HBOT might just be the breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for!
